Negotiation
Most companies negotiate a major contract once every few years. The account team across the table does it every week. Levelling that table is not a personality trait; it is preparation, position and timing — and most of it happens before anyone speaks.
Find the notice deadline in the current agreement and work back at least 90 days. That is when the work starts. Begin later and the supplier knows you cannot credibly leave, which is the same as having no leverage.
Read the whole agreement, not the commercial schedule: renewal mechanics, indexation, volume commitments, service levels and credits, termination rights, data and exit provisions. Most of the money is in clauses nobody looked at when it was signed.
Your account has a margin, a renewal target and a salesperson with a quota. A £300k renewal that walks is a bad quarter for someone. That is your counterparty's pressure; the negotiation goes better when you understand it as well as they understand yours.
Leverage is the credible ability to do something else. Run a light market test — two or three alternative suppliers, a clear scope, indicative pricing. You may never use it. Its existence changes every number the incumbent offers.
Price is one line. Others that move money or risk:
Plan concessions in advance: what you will trade, what you want in return, and your walk-away point — written down before the first meeting.
The terms you won are only the terms you get if someone checks invoices against them, watches the next notice window and runs the reviews the contract promises. That is a calendar and a habit — or, for most SMEs, a service.
Tell us about it. We reply within one business day with an honest view on whether — and how much — we can move it.
